USC football: The story behind Barkley’s INT

November 30th, 2009, 4:53 pm · 17 Comments · posted by Michael Lev, staff writer

So who was to blame for Matt Barkley’s interception in the second quarter Saturday against UCLA?

Predictably, USC coach Pete Carroll defended Barkley, saying Damian Williams didn’t come out of his route at full speed.

Replays confirmed that assessment; Williams atypically rounded off his route and didn’t appear to be looking for the ball. But that doesn’t account for the fact that the pass was so far over Williams’ head that he thought it wasn’t intended for him.

“I saw it. I just couldn’t get it,” Williams said. “It was kind of high. Honestly, I thought it was going to RoJo.”

Williams explained that the play called for him to break to the outside and Ronald Johnson to continue inside and up the field. The hope is to get the safety to commit to one or the other. UCLA played it well, though, leaving neither receiver obviously open.

With that being the case, Barkley probably should have thrown the ball away.

“It wasn’t well executed,” play-caller Jeremy Bates said. “We were off a little bit. We have to get our timing right.”

Off a lil’ bit…come on “Norman” Bates. Your qb is doing a disservice to the other talent on the field. And the play calling is predictable. Love how you can tell the bubble screens so easily. Get some real plays.

And what else would you expect from PC. No one can talk bad about his step son MB.

are you kidding me. even if he d will did run the right play. why the heck did barkly throw it. once again blaming everybody but barkley

  • Frank says:

The “story” behind the interception….this is news? Isn’t like the interception was game changing. Let it go already, Barkely is the starter and being such will get backed by his coaches.

  • jax says:

I GUESS THE MAN CRUSH IS CONTAGIOUS

  • lapazloco says:

He’s a Freshman. He was chosen to be the starter by the coaches. If their was someone better Pete would of sat him down. It’s not like this is a great Offense or even a good one. The Defense is so,so. We are getting turn overs like the past. Good field position helps out an Offense and most of all the play calling for Matt the Frosh. Get them ready for the 2010 season. No big names in the draft other than Taylor Mays and look average this year. I’m backing them for it to get better. BCS? Don’t think do not yet…

    D WILL IS A TOP 4 RECIEVER

  • jax says:

THE WILL BE EVEN WORSE NEXT YEAR WITH MOST OF THE O LINE LEAVING. AND HE WAS NOT THE BEST QB . PETE JUST WANTED TO TRY TO MAKE A NATIONAL TITLE WITH A FRESHMAN. HE WAS NOT WHAT HE WAS MADE OUT TO BE. AND NOW THAT THINGS AREN’T GOING PETE’S WAY HE HAS TO BLAME EVERYBODY ELSE

  • Brian from B'ham says:

No matter what you say lapazloco, you’re going to be wrong. They want SC to fail, even when we’re losing. Tell me this.. Name another team with a true freshman QB and inexperienced linebackers that has an 8-3 record. I’ll tell you who, Nobody…

  • KRM says:

what a joke. it was a terrible and costly pass. PC gambled the season on a true frosh QB and lost. thanks PC.

  • GMoneyTrojans says:

Lol Pete doesn’t gamble on seasons if he honestly thought that either Aaron corpse or Mitch mustain could have done better they woulda played. We rebuilt from loosing massive tallent on both sides of the ball and still gonna have 10 wins with a horribly tough road schedule. Next year defense will be stronger, qb better, his recievers more experienced and oh yeah OC and DC not rookies ;)-

  • lapazloco says:

Brian from B-ham~ your right about the 8 - 3 record. I’m just trying to look at it from a Betting mans view. Matt can only get better at 6′5″ 215# and growing. I saw him at Mater Dei. Looked better as a junior than his senior year. Hey he’s at USC playing QB has good looks. I think he’ll be fine. People sometime hate sucessful people. Wish I had a son in his position. No cry babies… Hey I’m just saying … ” Fight on USC.”

  • pkcourt says:

    His record is 8-2

  • Maria says:

    Great another Pete flunky!

Bark looked good as a junior because all his receivers were seniors. When he became a senior, his wide outs were inexperienced. So what does he do…the decided to throw to anyone who could catch the ball. He wanted a reception…didn’t matter if it was his player or not.

So what happens next? He gets a “high powered” offense with tons of talent and ends up loving to throw to the other team just as much as his own. Pete screws over his other to qbs because matty is his adopted son. You can probably go ask to be his uncle.

And yes…he can only get better. He should throw 20 TDs and 19 INTs next season. Should be a dandy season…can’t wait.

I believe Vegas has 20:1 odds that USC will be in the Emerald Bowl in 2010. You all should jump on it because you’re not going to a BCS game next year!

  • pkcourt says:

Matt only did what coach Rollison told him to do, as he is doing at USC. I have no idea how many games USC will win next year, but I would bet that it will be more than they lose. I personally don’t care what bowl they play in, I just like to watch them play.

  • lapazloco says:

Maria~ If Rollison had a better QB at Mater Dei when Matt was Senior he would of put him just like Pete would done at USC. I belive those two coaches can grade talent better than you and I. Look Pete would rather win games than have a Step-Child as you say. In a earile text I Aalso stated that I thought SC wouldn’t go to a BCS Bowl next year. Matt has 3 more years at SC to improve his game and become a leader. Hey Carson Palmer & Matt Lenart didn’t start as out as “Great” QB’s let alone start as as Frosh. And look how they turn out! What’s the rush?

  • Maria says:

Hey L…you’re in love with Bark just like Pete. Both of you are delusional. Just go get in line and ask if you could be his uncle.

  • Quintiam says:

Hey Marie, er Mario got anymore funny jokes about injured USC athletes?

    You’re all class Mario.
