Stanford band gone wild

November 14th, 2009, 2:10 pm · 25 Comments · posted by Michael Lev, staff writer

The unabashed Stanford band centered its halftime routine around Joe Francis — USC alum and “Girls Gone Wild” founder.

Needles to say, the performance was not well received. The band left the field to a chorus of boos.

I’m guessing the scripts for visiting bands’ halftime routines aren’t pre-approved.

The bit was funny, to be sure. I’m not sure it was remotely appropriate for the venue, but that’s the Stanford band for ya.

Pete Carroll is dead will the real PC please come out of hiding, this team should turn down a bowl if they get one they totally don’t deserve it.

  • KRM says:

any more details, or a video link, to the band show?

  • Kenny says:

why can’t coach Carroll find a decent offensive coordinator??? Bates and Morton both suck, btw they’re 10 times worse than Sark. Is there any chance of bringing Chow back???

  • Jason says:

Just open up the pocketbook, USC. I’m sure you can lure some more high-paid assistant coaches to your clutches.

  • JT says:

I was at the game and the Stanford Band’s performance based on Joe Francis was classless and a sad commnetary of the Stanford Band’s self worth. I exepect much better than that from Stanford.

  • KRM says:

Kenny, PC intentionally hires younger OCs so that no one will challenge him as the ultimate leader of the offense. PC is the OC. Got it?

  • TS says:

I’m surprised I’m not seeing more about the Stanford halftime show. It was totally classless. Not something I would have expected from Stanford. The Stanford fans sitting in my area were understandably embarrassed by the insults and cheap shops that kept coming at USC, all based on one alumnus, Joe Francis. My 14 year old son came away from the game with a negative feeling toward Stanford, when they have been on his short list of schools he has shown interest in. And that is even after the butt kicking they gave USC.

  • PMG says:

So, TS, if your son gets a chance to go to Stanford you will veto it because of the marching band?

You have to admit that the immature one here isn’t the band, or Harbaugh for going for two, but the guy who who thinks his son attending one of the top five universities in the world is a bad idea because of the band.

  • anna says:

This was so embarrassing to Stanford and the Pac 10. I can’t believe that SC doesn’t have to approve the halftime show. For a school that compares to the Ivy league nationally,Stanford’s band and coach looked tasteless and classless in front of 90,000 (+) people. I hope Harbaugh, the Stanford band, students and alumni are happy with their new identity. And people make cheap shots at SC? This was disgraceful behavior.

  • Mike4SC says:

Seeing Stanford’s pathetic “band” made me proud to be a Trojan, win or lose. The only good thing about their tasteless exhibition was that you could hardly hear them for all of the booing. They were literally, and justifiably booed off the field.

Their performance says a lot about who they are as an organization and a school. Stanford has no class at all. If I had gone there instead of USC I’d honestly be embarrassed.

    Fight On!

  • A Close Observer says:

PMG > The immature ones were the Stanford band members. One of the tuba players had a huge marijuana leaf painted on the inside of his tuba, with “This Bud’s For You” painted above it. The (shirtless) bass drum player dropped his drum at one point during the show and ran over to the band leader, who was riding a stuffed horse, and had mock sex with the horse. It was offensive and totally inappropriate for a family venue.

So, yeah, it says something about the institution that would allow its band to represent it like that. (Their performance wasn’t an aberration, they have a reputation for being tasteless - Google it.) I leaned over to my high school junior son, and told him that Stanford was “off the list”. And don’t kid yourself, any kid that can get into Stanford has other good offers to choose from, too.

  • GJR says:

PMG is a jerk. TS is wise to be wary of Stanford and its know-it-all faculty and students. Wait and consider it for grad school.

  • Bud Darlin says:

    GJR….
The replies here are almost certainly being added to the wall of the Stanford Band shack. You people don’t seem to get the point that they were trying to rub all of you in this direction. The fact is that Joe Francis is one of your kind. Tasteless and classless? Look in the mirror, it’s you…and Joe Francis. The SC family. Brilliant stab by one of America’s finest institutions, the Leland Stanford Junior University Marching Band.

  • Bud Darlin says:

Oh and to all of you posers claiming your spawn are crossing Stanford off their list…puhleeeeese get over yourselves. We assure you that no John Bircher demon seed from Orange County is welcome at Stanford.

  • Rod S says:

As a personal friend of “This Bud is For You” as well as a tuba player in the LSJUMB, I take umbrage at your insinuations and downright insults. “Classless?” U$C can do better than that. We are more than classless: We are brilliantly irreverent, hopelessly arrogant, happily sensationalist, and we rock the F&*K out to boot. We welcome your insults, so give us some good ones, after all, we need some new material for the next show we play on your field.

“And don’t kid yourself, any kid that can get into Stanford has other good offers to choose from, too.”

I assume U$C is one of these “fine options?” Yeah, because that’s an even BETTER choice than Stanford! And Trojans CANNOT sit there and call the Stanford Band classless and tasteless. One, you were offended by the field show because you know it’s true and it hurts to hear the truth–and everyone knows that Trojans get pissed the second they start losing, so they look for someone to unleash all their anger and fury upon. Two, there were many Trojans that gave the Band and Stanford fans the middle finger before (and naturally, after) the halftime performance. Ya call that classy? And I believe that this is also inappropriate in the same family venue that ‘A Close Observer’ describes; I can guarantee you, that kind of immature bullcrap does not happen in Stanford Stadium. Even Cal fans don’t stoop down to that level.

Finally, I’m sure that you parents are biased against Stanford and just want your children to end up at hapless U$C. At least 5 years ago, $C had a superb athletic prowess to compensate for its lack of decent academics.

Well for that scenario to work out Mike, you would have to be accepted to Stanford first.

  • cardinal alumni says:

    Rod S.

You are right about one thing–you are hopeless; you are the opposite of brilliant. Arrogant yes–with no cause–and your sound is third rate.
But, above all you are a huge embarrassment to the alumni and to the university as a whole. Get over yourselves. You have nothing to hang your hat on except rudeness and immaturity.
Flat out, you are a bunch of fools. Our school is great, the band blows super chunks of crap, and you seem to be the toilet loving every last squirt.

  • AntiSlice says:

Apparently everyone’s forgotten that the U$C student section thought the show was hilarious for the first joke or two about Girls Gone Wild. Then they realized they were being made fun of.

  • LUL says:

    @cardinal alumni
Every alum I know that goes to football games loves the Stanford Band. Also it’s not like the band just started being controversial. They started in 1963.

  • Mark says:

As a Stanford alum, I am absolutely loving all of the hysterical, self-righteous outrage expressed by USC types over the antics of the world’s greatest college band, the inimitable Leland Stanford Junior University Marching Band. “Off the list”, “I expected much better from Stanford”, “disgraceful”, etc., etc., etc. Mission accomplished, LSJUMB. Keep up the good work. No school on Earth combines academic excellence with athletic achievement like Stanford. Stanford admits only the best and brightest while USC admits those who can cover a big check. I know what you SC types are thinking - “we gave up the most points in the team’s history - to STANFORD??! Believe it.

  • TrojanAgainstStereotypes says:

As a current USC student, I do agree with the fact that Stanford’s band peformance puts their school to shame. Call me biased, but I sincerely think that my school’s band displayed a much more dignified and appropriate response to Stanford’s insults. From the student section, it sucked to see a visiting school mock me and my fellow students. Congratulations, Stanford band, you got what you wanted.

However, it’s a bigger shame to know that such a small group of individuals, whether it’s USC alumnus Joe Francis or the Stanford band as a whole, has to represent their entire school. NO, not all USC students have their sights set on becoming “dirty old man” industry entrepreneurs as the Stanford announcer suggested during the halftime show.

As for Stanford, way to go guys, you now have people talking trash not just about USC, but about your school, too.

  • John Smith says:

    Two things USC Whiners:
First: Stanford’s band is FAMOUS for its bits. This is nothing new for them. They are completely and totally irrelevant.
Second: You can’t run the score up on a team ranked higher than you. Particularly not one of the most powerful schools traditionally in the country. You insult your school by whining about Stanford getting a little revenge (in case you forgot, this score was pretty much the same score as the 2005 game). What’s the matter, can’t deal with the shoe on the other foot?

  • Bud Darlin says:

Nice. Love to see the Cardinal represent. USC’s only redeeming quality is that sexual peccadilloes (e.g. Joe Francis/Alum) are all good and that the unofficial policy for students and the athlete/students is simply “don’t ask, don’t tell”.
