USC football: Harris, Gerhart nab Pac-10 honors

November 9th, 2009, 1:41 pm · 10 Comments · posted by Michael Lev, staff writer

The reigning Pac-10 Conference offensive and defensive players of the week will square off at the Coliseum on Saturday.

Stanford tailback Toby Gerhart won the offensive honor after rushing for 223 yards and three touchdowns in the Cardinal’s upset victory over Oregon.

USC safety Will Harris won the defensive award after recording two interceptions in the Trojans’ 14-9 victory at Arizona State. The first went for a 55-yard touchdown; the second came in the end zone on the game’s final play.

Stanford kicker Nate Whitaker won the special teams honor after making 3 of 4 field-goal attempts and 6 of 6 PATs.

Whitaker had a slightly better day than USC’s Jordan Congdon, who came up well short on his lone FG attempt, from 47 yards, but nonethless is among the 20 semifinalists for the Lou Groza Award, given to the nation’s top placekicker.

The INT returned for a TD was great, but Harris’ second INT is bogus. He and Mays fought over the ball instead of just knocking it down. Not very smart.

  • Wade says:

Didn’t really matter. There were no sundevils within 10 yards, but 3 Trojans. If there was anyone within the area, you knock it down tho.

  • GMoneyTrojans says:

Point is players are too individually motivated. Personal stats versus the team concept. High stepping and muscle flexing (although they shouldn’t be pentalies) have no place on our team. Trojan jerseys don’t have players names on them for a reason. Id really like to see Pete steer this program away from the 80s-90s miami premodonnas, and back to classy team Troy attitutes.

  • McLOVIN says:

Couldn’t agree more GMoney. This team needs to get back to basics.

That ASU receiver looked closer than 10 yards to me. And if Mays and Harris start bobbling the ball back and forth and that ASU WR keeps running towards them anything can happen. Knocking it down is the only foolproof way to end the game.

I agree, you hit it the nail right on the head. Unfortunately, I don’t think that’s going to change soon since they are just going by the example of the head coach. He himself is more concerned with personal glory and acclaim and won’t cede control of other facets (ie..the Offense) of the game to more knowledgeable and capable people for fear of them upstaging him.

I understand your gripe with PC, he has gotten to be somewhat stubborn and controlling. However, if it were not for PC and his recruiting ability, this conversation would be moot. PC returned Troy back to prominence, something that had been missing for a long time. Now, we have all become spoiled with being #1 and can’t accept being 2nd or 3rd or worse 8th or 9th. God forbid we don’t finish in the top 10, I would hate to see the profanities on PC’s car. This guy may be self-centered but, he is only trying to maintain the expectations that the “fans and media” has so unjustly placed on him. Answer this one question for me.. What was the capacity of the stadium before PC? SC didn’t get the type of burn it has so rightfully deserved prior to PC coming, did it? No. Now, we lose a few games and everybody is questioning his coaching abilities. I’m a guilty party in this myself. However, I had to step back and re-think things. We lost 8 defensive players to the NFL last year (including 4 great linebackers), our starting QB, a kicker, the OC and DC. Injuries have crippled the roster. Most teams would be .500 at best. Somehow, we still manage to get 7 wins this season so far with the possibility of 10 and an bowl game. You say poor coaching by PC, I say great job by PC. Thanks for all you have done for this football program.. Go Trojans.. Fight On!!

You should be happy they finally got an interception. The way I saw it, the two guys were fighting for credit of who got the interception. Just another example of how the team isn’t playing together but more of individuals. You’ll never win because there’s nothing but I and Me, Me, Me on the team.

  • Brian from B'ham says:

There’s no i in team, true. But, there’s an i in win. I would much rather two teammates fight over the ball than to have one of them fight over the ball with an ASU receiver. Then it becomes an issue of win or loss. You decide. They’re only trying to do what we expect them to do, that’s wIn..

  • pkcourt says:

    NO LEADER =MESS

  • InTheZONE says:

There wasn’t an ASU receiver anywhere close to the ball. Those two guys were battling to add to their stats. They need it when it comes to negotiating their draft spots. Regardless, we won the game.
