USC football: ‘Our mission is to score seven on every drive’

November 5th, 2009, 7:15 am · 5 Comments · posted by Michael Lev, staff writer

batesGiven the USC defense’s recent struggles, you might assume the offense would alter its game plan to emphasize time of possession.

When the reverse was true a year ago and the defense was consistently dominant, the coaches went to a more conservative offensive approach, knowing the Trojans likely would win if they simply didn’t turn the ball over.

But first-year play-caller Jeremy Bates (pictured) doesn’t plan to take his foot off the accelerator.
“It’s definitely a team sport, but as an offense, we’re always going to go into a game attacking,” Bates said. “Our mission is to score seven on every drive. We’re not going to change our philosophy.”

That being said, Bates thought he might have taken it too far once USC fell behind at Oregon.

“We got too aggressive too early,” he said. “We were just trying to make a big play and change the momentum.”

Marie is a typical bruin. I’ve seen this bitter, irrational, and childish banter before. Keep up the good work!

Cue (oh yeah, YOU’RE bitter, irrational, and childish as the comeback)

Marie must have been stood up by a Trojan and is now taking it out on us.

    Enjoy 0-6 this weekend!

ps. I will never understand why Bruins spend so much time on USC blogs. It’s weird. The same thing happens at InsideSocal. Is jealousy and envy the sincerest form of flattery?

I guess when you have nothing to root for with your own team, garnering negative attention on USC blogs is your only outlet for such sadness and disappointment. I understand, you want a hug?

Seriously, that is the first comment in this thread? You Troll-jans are nothing but class. It’s too bad the Register allows you to post, but it sure is a telling sign of the poor sports USC fans really are. I can’t believe you are STILL belly-aching after last Saturday’s 43-20 loss at Oregon. Actually, I can believe it. But it’s sad.

Now how about actually discussing some football, Troll-jans?

‘Our mission is to score seven on every drive’…no reeeeally Jeremy Bates? Duh, I thought the goal was to make a field goal on every other drive. With this guy a the helm, it’s no wonder USC’s so-called “dynasty” has come to an end.

    Marie ….. WHATEVER !!!!

Plus, its 6 not 7 …… Come on Bates, the PAT is NOT a given in CFB.

Trojans: Play calling was WAY TOO conservative. That mixed with 2 key drops by Blake Ayles in the 1st half made the Trojans very offensive. (This coming from an alum.) You literally could SEE the momentum shifting to Oregon through the 2nd quarter every time the Trojan offense went to a 4th down.

Missing plays: Student Body Right/Left, Off Tackle Left/Right, & FB in the flat (NO passes to DJ…..WHY NOT? Blocking is good, but DJ was recruited as a wideout). Oregon CBs were playing up in the 1st half & back in the 2nd …… like DUH! That was obvious seeing it on TV. Injuries or not, the playbook was NOT opened up for Trojan Offense.

On to the Holiday Bowl we go (maybe to see Maimi or OK state?) ….. FIGHT ON!

That a TD is the goal on every drive is a given. In all honesty, offense wasn’t the concern at Oregon (while it’s true that the offense, indeed entire team seemed to have given up by the middle of the 3rd quarter). The real problem was the SC defense, who were dressed as ghosts for Halloween.
