Consider this: the Sun Devils’ kicker Thomas Weber converted on 24 of 25 field goal attempts last season to earn All-American honors and win the Lou Groza Award given to the nation’s top kicker.
Weber had back-to-back low field goal attempts blocked in the third quarter. Neither kick really got off the launching pad.
Maybe ASU head coach Dennis Erickson had a hunch when he decided to punt midway through the second quarter instead of letting Weber take a crack at a 52-yard field goal with a strong wind at his back.
