Grade it: USC’s coaching vs. Oregon State

LEV’S GRADE: D-PLUS

Let’s start at the beginning: For whatever reason, USC did not come out ready to play. The Trojans couldn’t match the Beavers’ intensity and tenacity in the first half, and then couldn’t catch up. Pete Carroll knew Oregon State represented a potential pothole en route to the BCS title game yet couldn’t steer his team clear of it. Can you blame Carroll and the coaches for the defense’s lack of gap discipline? To a degree, you can. But the Trojans’ bad tackling wasn’t the coaches’ fault. The offense sputtered in part because of poor line play, in part because of predictable and at times nonsensical playcalling. It seemed as if the Beavers almost always knew what was coming. They covered the flats extremely well and invariably positioned a weak-side defender in Mark Sanchez’s face when he bootlegged. Offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian used the “Q Attack,” featuring tailback Joe McKnight as a shotgun quarterback, at peculiar times - once on a second-and-16, once on a third-and-7. Are those the right downs and distances to call those plays? Not a good night for Carroll & Co.

Now it’s your turn:

How would you grade USC's coaching against Oregon State?

I thought our OFFENSIVE PLAYCALLING and GAMEPLANNING had FINALLY IMPROVED !!
They reverted back to the BONEHEADED playcalling of the LAST 2 YEARS !! :(
AND they TOTALLY BLEW IT by rotating too many RB’s in.
McKNIGHT and GABLE should have been getting almost ALL the carries so they could get into a RYTHM !!

    What a NIGHTMARE !!! :(

    OUR OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR DOESN”T FIT,
    HE MUST A’QUIT !!

Hopefully the love affair with McKnight is over. He does not have the stones to be out there. Will someone please play CJ Gable.

Hey Sarkesian - Shotgun, you ever heard of it.

Exactly what I was going to say. I saw one or two glimpses of improvement in the play calling in the Rose Bowl game last season. Then, after the improvements in the Virginia and Ohio State games, I was willing to give Sark the benefit of the doubt and say he just had to settle into his role. Now he seems to have reverted back to his old ways. He needs to consistently make better decisions for the rest of this season or we need to get rid of him. I don’t think he bears the entire responsibility for this loss, but he definitely bears a large portion of it.
